2003.0120.2359::A Bronze VIP Poll...
[ | ]
In case some of you didn't know, I have a website devoted to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you don't know what this is about, ignore this.

Would you visit the Bronze VIP Archives in a LiveJournal Format?

Yes, instead of the site you already have...

Yes, in addition to the site you already have...
19(59.4%)
No. What's wrong with the site you already have?
1(3.1%)

Would you want to comment on Bronze VIP Posts that you find on LiveJournal?

Yes, that would be fun
20(62.5%)
No, it's not like we can talk with the VIPs hours after they've already left.
6(18.8%)
I don't know
6(18.8%)

How would you prefer a LiveJournal'ed VIP Archive to be organized?

Every individual post should be an individual LiveJournal Entry
6(18.8%)
Every continguous block of board posts should comprise an individual LiveJournal Entry.
20(62.5%)
I don't know
6(18.8%)

In case you're not an LJ user, the questions I posed involved porting the new VIP Archives into LiveJournal format. The primary changes would be the address would be simpler, and you may be able to comment and discuss the posts in question. Do you think this would be a desirable feature to the VIP Archives?

If you have any suggestions, you can post an anonymous comment...

[User Picture]Just so y'all know, regarding question #3, I'm leaning toward every individual post being an entry. I'll give you the reasons why:

  1. Since it looks like people want to comment on items, it's easier to comment on an individual post, rather than a block of posts.
  2. Given that I miss posts sometimes, it'll be relatively easy to insert a missing post into place, rather than edit an existing entry to include it (I'm still deciding on how I want to do this, so editing entries may very well be completely out of the question).
  3. Once I have the code to make posts into LJ entries, it'll be easy to port the historical posts as well. I can put posts from 1998-2002 into LJ in one fell swoop.

Any comments?

Hmm...you're taking a poll on whether to switch the archive to livejournal format, and you're making the voting open only to livejournal members? That doesn't seem like the best way to get an accurate response.

In any case, I really despise the livejournal format, I don't care about anyone else's comments, and I don't mind the long URL - that's what bookmarks are for. So consider this a 'no' vote.

[User Picture]In case you're checking this forum, I'm not going to be switching to LJ, but adding the LiveJournal format as an option to readers. The existing archives will remain as they are (with a possible move to a new server if I decide to buy a domain).

As for the polls, unfortunately, livejournal polls are only available to livejournal users, a failing I only became aware of *after* I set the poll up.

I think the current archive system is great, and I appreciate that you list which writer's have posted on a specific date. The only change I've ever wished to see is for the posts the VIP's are clearly referring to to be included. I realize that is more difficult. Perhaps people would add the posts in the comments section of LJ, if that were available. Sometimes the answer implies the question, but sometimes it doesn't. I'd like to be able to listen to both sides of the telephone conversation, as it were.

[User Picture]Unfortunately, the way I'm slurping down the posts precludes the option of searching for the questions. Basically, I'm grabbing any post which begins with "[Some VIP] says:" and ends with the "Back to Top" marker.

Looking for nicks and other posts would require another pass through the file, and would likely return some false positives, ending up with a VIP archive full of personal shout-outs and general gabbery, which is the kind of stuff I threw the Archive together to personally avoid.

One alternative might be to provide links to the Beta Archive pages that Artie provides, but since those are only on temporarily, the links would eventually end up 404.

It's a question I've wrestled with since I started the Archives, and I've never found a decent solution.

Sure thing, although, I'm not sure how much traffic it'll get now that Buffy's done. I suppose there's still Angel, but I've been going on almost a month without VIP posts...

[User Picture]i expect they'll show up to spread and bask in the Angel love. and little traffic is good w/ me - there's too much to read in one lifetime anyway.

Heh, don't I know it. I've got a stack of books about 10 high on my nightstand, and that's not all I have to read...
