While diligently doing laundry and washing dishes, I've had Emmeril Live on, and he just said "Don't even think about touching that dial!" which brought to mind a question. Just how many people know what that phrase means nowadays. So, once again, I decided to throw together this unscientific poll of the friends list.

Poll #468886 Touching the Dial

17(100.0%)
No
0(0.0%)

Have you ever literally used the "dial" in question?

Yes
14(82.4%)
No

1(5.9%)
60s-70s
4(23.5%)
70s-80s

[User Picture]Yeah, I was just wondering just how much people who'd never literally "touched that dial" knew why people even used the terminology, given the ubiquitous remote control.

It reminds me of part of a post that Neil Gaiman did on his blog (do a text-search for 'Gibson') where he talks about how the phrase "[the color] of television, tuned to a dead channel" has utterly changed in meaning since William Gibson first wrote it in 1984's Neuromancer.
