2009.0615.1412::You take the good; you take the bad
A note to anyone playing Fallout 3:
If you've installed the Broken Steel add-on before attempting the Finding the Garden of Eden main story-line quest, there's going to be a section of the quest where you're walking through Vault 87 (I'm pretty sure it's the Lab section--it might be the Crew's Quarters, though). You're going to come across a two-story room (like in every other Vault) that'll be the second door on your left after going up a set of stairs. Once you enter, two Super Mutant Overlords will come out and blast the bejebus out of you.

This is a pre-programmed encounter that I'm guessing was with Super Mutant Masters before I decided to pay money to up my character's level cap from 20 to 30. As soon as you step into that room, the encounter activates.

So here's a hint:
Backtrack to the stairs, and go into the first room on your left. Walk across that large room, and exit through the door on the other end. After taking care of all the other Super Mutants around, enter that same room from the other side (where the Overlords would be coming from). The encounter will activate, but this time, with the original Super Mutant Masters without Tri-beam Laser Rifles. Much easier to deal with.

I hope my seventeen hours of gameplay yesterday (note: not all at that part of the game) helps you out.

  1. The E3 Trailer for Prince of Persia that I downloaded a while ago on my Xbox 360.
  2. The haunting music from the trailer: Saeglopur by Sigur Ros.
  3. The Android app Shazam (originally developed for the iPhone) which told me what the music was without the need for me to do various permutations of the search: "Prince of Persia trailer music."
  4. My Playstation 1 memory card has somehow lost my save game data for my not-even-through-with-disc-1, but-spent-over-a-week-of-playtime game of Final Fantasy VII.

2009.0306.1547::Spoiler-free Watchmen Review (and a meme)
Watchmen succeeds in capturing the main plotline of the comic, and there are some lovely sequences where Snyder emulates the slow-paced pull-out that Moore and Gibbons created when introducing a new issue. You can tell that Snyder used the comic as storyboards, using the art to set up angles and shots. There's a bit of over-exposition in a couple of places, where the script has characters Legolas the plot points. The guy playing Ozymandias is at times so soft-spoken and wooden, it robs his particular scenes of power--Ozymandias is supposed to be cool and emotionless for the majority of the plot, but there are a couple of scenes in the books where he emotes more, and I didn't really see any of that in the movie. I would have preferred an older, more mature actor in the role.

Pacing was odd--for a three-hour movie, it flowed pretty well, but emulating the comic in plot and focus gave the movie a certain meandering quality, pointing the audience in different directions as to who to empathize with or pay attention to. Not a problem during a 12-issue comic series, but an issue for a largely single-threaded movie. Part of me thinks this would have worked a great deal better as a television mini-series.

There were some changes to the ending that I would have preferred unchanged. I'm not talking about THE BIG THING, but the epilogue. I think the changes undermine some of the themes of Watchmen, but for the most part, I thought the movie a very, very good adaptation of the comic.

Incidentally, for those of you who haven't read the comic, both the movie and the source are very, very dark and violent. You have been warned.

As I've twittered way too many times, "3 out of 4 'HURM's."

And now, a tagged meme... )

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you OR I've already read yours and think we have a lot in common.

Honestly, I'm not going to tag anyone because either you've already been tagged or you're getting tired of this whole thing...

I've done this before... )

2007.0811.2054::8-bit Wonder
Hit the Alamo Jacks 3rd Anniversary Party last night and met up with the Sweetest Girl in All the World. We spent much of the evening playing Wordster on the bar crack video gaming machine with her ex-girlfriend's mom. It was good, however, meeting up with all the people I hadn't seen in a long while down in the Newnan area.

One highlight was hearing the opening "band" 8-bit Wonder, an act consisting of a dude armed with laptop, synthesizer, old Nintendo controllers, mixers, samplers and a mic, playing game-influenced Electronica/Dance reminiscent of VNV Nation crossed with whoever that band was that did "Pac-Man Fever."

2007.0208.1744::I'm a role model??
So last night, I ended up hitting a local bar for their Guitar Hero competition. Having played very little actual Guitar Hero II, I didn't sign up to compete, my primary reason for being there was to meet up with El Guapo, his brother [info]skander, and his other brother who to the best of my knowledge has no sort of blog. I get there somewhat earlier than the rest of the gang and mill about the bar while I wait for the Guapos. At one point one of the competitors walks up to me and asks, "Did you play at the competition at the Independent a long time ago?"

When I reply in the affirmative, he responds: "Dude, you're the reason that I play Guitar Hero!"

I'm not sure what to think of that.

Listening to the morning radio, I learned that the general contractor assigned to do roadwork on I-20 near Atlanta may be fined for exceeding the early-morning time alloted to blocking a lane on the interstate and causing a disproportionate amount of gridlock. Coupled with the recent news that Turner Broadcasting will likely pay some two million dollars for the media and police disruption of Boston as a result of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force viral marketing campaign, it occurs to me that if we're going to make people pay for screwing up traffic, then the purveyors of the Big Dig probably owe the city a pretty penny.

And finally, from [info]countessmary: Bold the series that you've seen for 3 or more episodes. Underline the series that you know for sure (or that you've seen them complete). If you want, add three more series (keep it in alphabetic order).

I added Beauty and the Geek, Cupid, and Psych.

I don't need a new messenger bag. I just set up my new computer at work so that I don't need to lug my laptop in to hear the sound from YouTube vids and MP3s. But when I see that a company in Miami is making messenger bags from recycled (big damn) movie posters, the greenie and the geek in me may very well ignore both the $88 price tag and the possibility that said bag may not even hold my laptop.

2006.0728.1637::It's 4:37 and Microsoft still sucks
One of my co-workers just walked in to the cave with a problem. He had been working with a document in Microsoft Office some time ago, and very distinctly remembers saving the file under a different name. He wasn't able, however, to find the document under the "Recent Documents" listing, nor was he able to find it in "My Documents."

This sounded very familiar, so I asked him if he had opened up the file from his own hard drive or whether it was opened from the web or e-mail.

See, a few months ago, I was faced with a Pinky who was brought to the point of tears when she couldn't find a Powerpoint presentation that she'd worked hours on. I only managed to find it when I followed the steps that she herself went through to open the document--open mail, click on attachment, work on powerpoint, save.

It turns out that Microsoft Outlook, when opening attachments, saves them to a randomly-named directory under whatever is designated temporary storage for Windows, and then opens the appropriate program. When saving the opened-via-Outlook document, then, it will save any changes to that same randomly-named directory, unless told otherwise.

Now I know the power users reading this will say, "Well, duh--you should always check to see where you're saving things." Indeed, some of the programmers in the audience might say "Why should I go through the trouble of checking where someone's saving something so they don't shoot themselves in the foot?" Well, if you're a Microsoft Outlook/Office programmer, I respond, "Because that's your fucking job."

To begin with, Outlook should probably query the user on whether or not they wish to save/execute an attachment, given the prevalence of viruses and worms. And when any related application attempts a user-initiated save to temporary storage, it should probably ask "You know you're going to save this into temp storage, are you sure you don't really want to save to My Documents?" Hell, it's bad enough with all the stupid tooltips coming from the system tray and that fucking paperclip--where's the harm in adding one or two more actually-useful messages?

2006.0405.0953::My brain may explode
[ ]
In a strange confluence of interests, Patrick "Striving to find a way to punch people in the face by using the Internet" Hughes has started a guest stint writing for the SuicideGirls (specifically, their newswire blog), which also hosts writings from Geek God Wil Wheaton, as well as the occasional pictorial of a naked, tattooed-and-pierced girl. To hear Patrick tell it:
For those not familiar with SuicideGirls, it's a trendsetting Web site that's grown into a full-blown, like, cultural movement, with shit-tons of imitators and spin-offs like books and touring revues. All based on the premise that people like to look at pretty girls who are naked. The girls at SuicideGirls happen to be of the naked punk and goth variety, something that, as you might guess, suits me just fine.
One-stop shopping for side-splitting laughter, geek culture, and porn... I may weep openly.

Things to do:
  • Pack
  • Make Everwood DVDs for Mom and Dad.
  • Find issues of Fables and Y: The Last Man for Jerry
  • Watch as much TiVo as possible to clear space, as I've been spending too much time playing Soul Calibur III and Guitar Hero to catch up on television.

2005.1121.2238::American Edit
[ | ]
While I might have called myself a Green Day fan in the early 90s, I haven't picked up American Idiot. I actually haven't picked up a Green Day album since Dookie. This is not because of any distate toward the band--I just haven't really picked up a CD of new, RIAA-produced music for a long time. I generally hear a lot of the songs on the radio, anyways.

Everyone, however, should go check out Dean Gray's American Edit, a free, downloadable album of American Idiot mashups. Two particular favorites are "Dr. Who on Holiday" (because of the geek-cred inclusion of the Dr. Who Theme Song) and "Novocaine Rhapsody" (which just supports the Good Omens theory that all music left in a car for a fortnight will eventually turn into the Best of Queen).

Thanks to a link from [info]ludditerobot, I found this Penny Arcade strip which pretty accurately describes the shenanigans that go on when [info]batnandu and I play our latest obsession, Soul Calibur III (as well as its predecessor, Soul Calibur II). While we haven't choked each other with the game controller cords (yet), [info]batnandu did punch me in the arm with some measure of seething anger...

What's missing from that strip, however, is the coda where someone suddenly realizes, "Holy Shit, it's 5:00 AM."

Which brings me back to [info]ludditerobot's original link--last night after dinner with a friend from out of town, Oz came over and brought his latest purchase: Guitar Hero. We would move to [info]batnandu's place sometime around 11:00 PM and play until 2:30 or so... and hence the title of this post.

Now someone needs to make a music game which combines Karaoke Revolution, Taiko Drum Master, and Guitar Hero so we can get a whole band going.

Preferably with some Journey songs. \m/

2005.1003.1453::Serenity and some Mandarin translations
I managed to catch Serenity three times this weekend--Friday night I met up with [info]leeannslytherin and [info]crazchica. Saturday, I avoided the Florida/Alabama game with another viewing and then met up on Sunday with [info]countessmary (who I wasn't able to sit with Friday night) for a third.

In general, the Mandarin in the movie is much better than the Mandarin in the series. Since some of the longer phrases are either spoken offscreen or look a bit like they've been ADR'd, I suspect that they had a dialogue/dialect coach come in to a recording studio and run them through the phrases multiple times and picked the best one.

Some Mandarin Translations--Possible Spoilers )

Like I said earlier, Serenity is good, and much of the success of the movie (and any possible future Firefly-related projects) is dependent on both the first and second weeks of ticket sales. So here's an offer for those of you that read this who have little idea of what I've just talked about. Of the qualifying persons who: live in the Atlanta area and have seen neither Serenity nor Firefly, the first one who comments on this entry will receive: one ticket to a showing of this movie for this coming weekend. I'm thinking the 4:40 showing at Regal Hollywood 24, but I'm flexible.

In other news, I watched Mirrormask this Saturday night, and it was good, too. A bit slow at parts, but visually striking.

The Devil [info]ludditerobot made me do it:
List 5 reasons why you are a dork. And make them good reasons.
Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud about how big of a dork
you are! Then pick the 5 biggest dorks you know and have them do the meme.

  1. When composing Livejournal entries and other assorted HTML posts, I make a distinction between my use of <i> tags for titles and <em> tags for other assorted emphasized text. Because there is a difference.
  2. Three words and three letters: Taiko Drum Master and DDR (neither of which I play with any degree of skill at all).
  3. I've never "picked up" a woman. I was actually struck speechless when a girl asked me to a party when we talked briefly at a condo event. I can't really cold-call a girl without a feeling of abject terror.
  4. When a friend asked me to help program an army of bots to play online poker, I declined because I felt it would ruin the "spirit of the game."
  5. Some three-to-four months ago, I busted my right pinky finger playing Soul Calibur II against [info]batnandu when the player I was controlling behaved counter to my intended input. I slammed my fist against the coffee table several times, and now my finger has been tender and sore for the past few months.

Now, not necessarily because they're dorks, but I figure they probably have some good stories. If they really want to, they're welcome to: [info]batnandu, [info]flattop, [info]bpeace, [info]katemonkey, [info]chinook_wind.

2005.0519.1106::Even more media
[ | | | ]
Aside from receiving Ai Yori Aoshi Disc 2 and Love Hina Disc 1 from Netflix yesterday, I hit Oxford Comics after work last night, and along with the Dark Horse Book of the Dead and Volume 9 of the Ai Yori Aoshi manga, I managed to pick up Chromaphile, the until-recently-out-of-print art book from Ragnar. I love this guy's stuff--a sort of retro-modern design pinup. Unfortunately, his main site's down for a redesign, but you can see some of it in an interview he did with CrownDozen.com. It even compels me to buy and iPod, despite my car already having a built-in MP3 player. Chromaphile is a bit thin for its cover price, but Amazon's got it for about fourteen dollars. Part of me wants to buy another copy to de-spine so I can frame specific pages, but the book-lover in me argues against it.

Edit: I just found this link off of the Make Magazine Blog. If you scroll all the way to the bottom (past the photos), you'll see there are links to "Full length pictures of the robe and tunic." Check out the photos, and tell me what's wrong with them.

2005.0518.1242::Media Overload
Two weekends ago, I'd pretty much caught up on all of the TiVo that I'd needed to. A backup of five weeks of Deadwood and South Park on top of the weekly viewing of Everwood, 24, Lost, and all the other network shows that I follow were behind me--only an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher and a single Mythbusters remained.

Somehow, in my newly-discovered free time, I've nearly drowned myself with an inundation of new media which, in addition to my weekly television fix, includes:
  • The Jerk DVD from Netflix
  • Dumb and Dumber DVD from Netflix
  • Ai Yori Aoshi Vol 1. DVD from Netflix
  • The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, and Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett Audiobooks
  • Negima and Love Hina by Ken Akamatsu Manga
  • Cupid DVDs that I bought on ebay
  • Kingdom Hearts on the PS2
  • Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando on the PS2
  • Hoyle Casino Omaha and Triple Crown poker tournaments on the PC
  • The LJ friends list
It's become quite a dilemma as to what I should do when I get home--do I watch the episodes of The Daily Show that have backed up to the point where the TiVo will start deleting them, or do I check the friends list (I know if I sit at the computer I'll be likely to start up a poker tournament)? Do I continue listening to what happens to Granny and Esk, or should I watch to see just who proposes marriage in the season finale of Gilmore Girls (I chose both--unfortunately not seeing who proposed because the stupid WB overran the 9:00 pm cutoff time because of their ten-minute included promo of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants--and ended up going to sleep at 1:00 AM after re-reading some more Negima)?

The meatspace isn't helping--just last night I went to see Unleashed with a friend, and a group of ten of us are in preparations to see Revenge of the Sith tomorrow night. The Independent's been holding a few Texas Holdem tournaments (in which I've been regularly placing), and I've made arrangements to meet up with the Indy's new waitress at Wallcrawlers to do some bouldering.

And on top of this, I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it. I'm swamped.

Sometime in recent memory, Jack Davenport and some Sandman fangirl got it on at somepoint.

Sad, really, that I only know Mariella Frostrup's name from those few episodes of the show.

ETA: Why Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates blow goats, Reason #1138:
I am in the process of trying to access a file that's on a PocketPC. The file is named "rsyncd.conf," it's located in the "\unix\etc" directory, and its contents are essential to what I am trying to do with the device. The only way that the OS has of natively viewing the file is to open the file up in PocketWord, the Microsoft Word analogue for Windows CE. The version of PocketWord that exists on PocketPC 2003 can only access two types of files--PocketWord files and Text files, and only within the My Documents directory. Even if I copy the file into the My Documents directory, I still cannot see it because Microsoft determines what kind of files to show by the three-letter extension.

I should, of course, be able to just rename the thing "rsyncd.txt" or something like that, right? Of course not, because the File Explorer acts just like Windows XP, obscuring the file extension from the user, except with no discernable way of changing that setting.

Why do they insist on making everything as dumb as the potential user that might use it?

2005.0324.2253::Get used to anticippointment...
"Never!"

Somewhere around twenty-two years ago, in a city not so far from here, my brother and I sat in a movie theater, transfixed by the images onscreen. I was nine at the time, my brother eleven, and when John Williams' score crescendoed, a deep-bass chorus chanting in the background, I remember Jerry pleading audibly with the screen, uttering exactly what I was thinking:

"Don't turn, Luke! Don't turn!"

Watching Return of the Jedi at that age, we didn't particularly care that the Ewoks were a particularly silly addition to the series; we didn't think that trees, stones and sticks shouldn't be effective against a high-tech army; nor did we have the slightest notion that getting stuck in the trash compactor was (spuriously) analogous to Joseph Campbell's "In the Belly of the Beast" mythic element.

We just loved Star Wars, and the Last Temptation of Luke was a bit much for our pre-adolescent minds to bear.

After repeated viewings and the first two prequels, however, Star Wars nowadays is something of a disappointment. The nostalgia is still there, but it's not unlike watching Krull for the first time as an adult and realizing that the movie sails along on an ocean composed entirely of cheese.

A couple of weeks ago, [info]ludditerobot pointed me at some hype for Robert Rodriguez' upcoming Sin City, and we had a brief discussion of the perils of looking forward to a movie too vehemently. We're both being a bit wary of watching the trailers for Batman Begins and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, although I did breakdown and watch them on the last couple of week's Coming Attractions.

All this week, Cartoon Network has been airing the latest episodes of Star Wars: Clone Wars, Genndy Tartakovsky's animated bridge between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Those of you who are fans of cartoons may know Tartakovsky's name from Dexter's Laboratory or the utterly brilliant Samurai Jack. When Clone Wars was first announced, I had to question if it would be a good thing or not. Just today, I picked up the first Clone Wars DVD at Costco and watched the Behind the Scenes feature "Bridging the Saga."

Having seen both Clone Wars, the latest trailer, and all the other assorted hype-goodies for the upcoming movie, I, despite myself, have now got the full on mental salivation for the Revenge of the Sith to come out.

Dammit.

2005.0223.1240::Video/Computer Game Quiz
Ok, I know a great many of you have played video and computer games, so I'm asking for some help with this. I've gotten 25 of the items, so far.

Accumulated answers under the cut... )

Edit: Done. The readers of Joystiq.com, whose article pointed me to the quiz in the first place, pretty much round out the answers--I've italicized those answers I got from the comments to the article.

2005.0110.1617::Hey, James! What? Video Games! What? The Devil is Everywhere!
I pretty much blew off all of my obligations for the past weekend. I went to a birthday thing for an old college buddy on Saturday afternoon, then [info]flattop and I were going to meet up at the Echo Lounge for their tribute to Elvis' birthday featuring Kingsized. In the meantime, I hit Costco for some milk and cheese, and then went home to get ready for the show.

In the meantime, I put Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time into the PS2.

At about 10:00 pm, [info]flattop calls me and asks if I'm at the show--the line has over 100 people trailing out the door, and they'd already opened a hour before. He had called to say he was bailing on the plan--I don't mind, having already lost about four hours to the game.

At some point after, the unselectable "Prince of Persia 1" extra feature on the disc catches my eye. I go to my computer to see how to access it, and I realize that my internet router has gone belly up, leaving me no internet access. At that point, I don't care.

At about 5:00 am, I realize that light is peeking out from behind my windowblinds.

At about 7:40, I go to sleep.

At about 11:45 am, [info]batnandu calls me to ask me if I'm going to train Tai Chi or go to brunch and the motorcycle show today. He's a bit two-minded about training, and since I'm sounding miserable and not quite awake, we decide to skip/postpone the lesson. I also decide to skip the motorcycle show. I try to go back to sleep, but the game, like a Siren's call, beckons me back to the couch.

Throughout the day, various people keep calling me to ask me to various outings. I manage to keep from shouting, "Quit fucking calling me!" enough to let them politely know that I'm not interested.

At about 6:30 pm, I kill the evil vizier, rescue the princess from an ugly death, and finally put down the freaking controller.

Today, during my lunch break, I go to Best Buy to look at new routers to reconnect my internet access. Wandering by the Games section, I notice they have Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal on one of the demo PS2s. I stand there and play through two missions...

Katamari Damacy, like Kingdom Hearts, makes me nauseous.

I hate my constitution.

Edit: I was wondering where I had heard that catchy Katamari Damacy theme song (sample available from this page) before. After putting in a different game to play without getting physically ill, I realized that an arrangement of the song appears on Namco's Taiko Drum Master.

In the process of writing this edit, I think I've listened to that groovy, thirteen-second, a capella song snippet at least 60 times. And it keeps getting catchier.

2004.1230.1702::Christmas highlights
Got back last night from a lazy, lazy week in Miami.

After mom's visit for a few days, we drove from Atlanta to Miami, with a stop in West Palm to pick up the elder brother. During the stop, I watched him play Counterstrike for a few hours before I began to feel slightly nauseous. Must be nice, having a computer fast enough to make you vomit.

Watched the entirety of the the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions with Jerry and Dad. Mom bowed out in the middle of Two Towers, and though she watched a bit of Return, I don't think it's something she's thrilled to partake of.

I've somehow managed, however, to get my parents (mostly my dad) addicted to Everwood. I watched most of the first season while I was down in Miami, and at some point, I'll need to send the discs down to them so they can watch the whole thing in rapt attention.

Things my brother has overheard his FSU-alum co-worker say:
  • "Well, you should understand. It's in your native language."
    regarding the Aramaic The Passion of the Christ to someone from Italy.
  • "It must suck to lose to an in-state rival."
    to a Virginia Tech-alum regarding Virginia Tech's loss to West Virginia a couple of years ago.
Got cash, some Tai Chi books, Katamari Damacy for the birthday/Christmas. "Katamari Damacy is not a violent game, but you can roll up balls of little children and nobody knows what happens to them after that," according to Wired.com.

Drove back up yesterday, listening to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I also had some PKD short stories, the Return of the King audiobook, Prisoner of Azkaban, and some recording to help me learn French. Personally, I think all of the above would have been more worthwhile...

2004.0921.1041::A contest of sorts
[ ]
A very happy birthday wish to [info]taraljc.

Those of you who have been reading this thing for a while might remember the day I put this message up on the Bronze Posting Board:
The message form on the following page will send a message to the maintainer of the Bronze VIP Archives only. He is a fan of the show and not involved with production in any way. There is no way that he knows of to send e-mail to Joss Whedon, David Fury, Drew Goddard, James Marsters, Sarah Michelle Gellar, or Alyson Hannigan (Truthfully, if he did know how to contact Alyson Hannigan, you probably wouldn't really care to send him a message, because he wouldn't be maintaining the VIP Archives--he'd be spending the entirety of his time worshipping her infinite lusciousness, Alexis Denisof notwithstanding).

If you're trying to talk to the creators of Buffy/Angel/Firefly/etc., don't even try.
Today, I received the following message:
Hi i'm [name edited] ý read your note but ý just wanna try please i
really gotta contact to Alyson i need your help and i'm
beggin' you now please if you know that Adress please sent
me

i will wait for you forever

thanks
While I'm perfectly content in responding with "No" or "Yeah, dude, I have her address, but she told me not to give it to anyone who will wait for me forever," I'd like to offer it up to you guys, who I know have a healthy overabundance of sarcarsm/snark, to see who comes up with the best response.

Post what you'd say to someone like this in the comments and I'll either pick the best one or put up a poll, and I'll send that response to them.

Incidentally, if the person who wrote said message is reading this--yeah, dude, I have her address, but she told me not to give it to anyone who will wait for me forever.

2004.0906.2312::Dragon Wrapup
[ ]
Like my old car, I'm totalled. After coming home from cleaning up the Buffy Track room and helping [info]aviationwolf and everyone else squared away for whatever transit they needed for their long trips home, I got home and did a horrendous pile of dishes and laundry that I've needed to do for days. So I'll just put everything in lists:

A few Con Highlights:
  1. Learning that the proper response to "Whatcha got under that kilt?" is not, according to Nathan Fillion, "Not as much as I would like," as a fan answered, but "Your mother's lipstick."
  2. Joining in on the bird war between Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite.
  3. Holding Julie Benz's lunch for her for a moment when I walked her (and her husband, John Kassir [dammit!]) from the Buffy Track room to the Walk of Fame.
  4. Delivering a drink to Matt, Jewel Staite's husband [dammit!] right after we sang him "Happy Birthday."
  5. Joining a drunk Matt in an impromptu karaoke rendition of the first few verses of "The Gambler" not five minutes later.
  6. Of particular amusement: seeing an old friend's ex-husband, who only after I'd taken a picture of him and his date for the Buffy Prom (who just happens to be the roommate of my DragonCon Boss) and had a few moments of conversation, recognized me as the man he believes slept with his ex-wife (I did not).
  7. Thinking how much this picture would amuse/infuriate [info]hradzka.

The Booty rundown:
  1. Signed Pictures:
    • To James: ♥ Jewel Staite
    • James - Shoot First. Nathan Fillion
    • James - my darling boy... Bite Me! ♥ Julie Benz
    • From "The Hero of Canton," Adam Baldwin "Jayne."

  2. Signed Firefly DVD set: "James - Stay Shiny, Nathan Fillion" and "To James, ♥ Jewel Staite"
  3. Battle Royale Special Edition Director's Cut.
  4. Studio Ghibli Complete Collection which includes:
    • Grave of the Fireflies
    • Laputa: Castle in the Sky
    • My Neighbor Totoro
    • Kiki's Delivery Service
    • Porco Rosso
    • Princess Mononoke
    • Spirited Away
    • On Your Mark
    • Nausicaa of The Valley of The Wind
    • Only Yesterday
    • Ocean Waves
    • Pom Poko
    • Whisper of The Heart
    • The Cat Returns
      [holy shit! all that in a box for only $60??] yep...

  5. Tsui Hark's The Legend of Zu
  6. Numerous crappy digital photos at the Con.
  7. A $35 imitation Japanese sword with a metal dragon hilt with tsuba-wing design. I believe it might be a Last Samurai replica, but hey, it was 35 dollars, and it completed my Crazy 88 outfit (I have no pictures of me as a Crazy 88--If you happen to find DragonCon pics of a Crazy 88, let me know if he's Asian, 'cause as far as I know, I was the only Asian 88 there).

Yeah, now I'm tired. Sleepytime.

2004.0617.1202::Because I'm a geek
[ | | ]
Of the rare individuals reading this journal by actually going to the front page and clicking through the entries, some of you may have noticed three new links at the bottom of the left-side linkbar. Labelled "current..." I've taken to listing the various media that I'm partaking of at the time (of the last update).

Since two of the items will be books ("current read" and "current bookclub"), I figured I'd go ahead and link to Amazon (and no, I'm not getting anything from the link).

Linking to Amazon is a bit of a pain in the ass. The fact remains that Amazon URLs, while from a coding point of view probably a huge weight lifted from their developers, are quite possibly the most user-unfriendly aspect of their site. Apart from their coders, who knows what part of the URL actually contains the portion of the site that pertains to the product you're looking at and what part will grant some anonymous surfer access to your wish list and credit card number? (yes, I'm being sardonic)

Paul Bausch, author of Amazon Hacks knows.

And he provided the following page on O'Reilly's site for creating shorter URLs to Amazon products.

Since I'm a geek, I threw together the following bookmarklet to click on when you're surfing Amazon and want to generate the short URL. It'll generate a small popup window where the short URL is easily copy-and-paste-able.
Link It
Edit: Since LJ apparently doesn't let you embed javascript code in a link anchor, the link goes to a page I have on my own site with the bookmarklet.

The technically-inclined might ask why I didn't just use javascript's alert() function--Mozilla Firefox doesn't appear to allow you to copy and paste from the alertbox.

2004.0608.1245::How to go broke saving money*
[ | | | | | ]
Things I picked up this weekend:
  • Coupling Series 3 (with a $5 off Best Buy coupon)
  • Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
    Koshun Takami's Battle Royale Vol 7
    Ken Akamatsu's A.I. Love You Vol 3
    Clamp's Cardcaptor Sakura Boxed Set (Vols 4, 5, and 6)
    Make It In Minutes (all under a "Buy 4 books get the 5th free" sale and another $5 Waldenbooks coupon)
  • Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (with a 25% off Borders coupon).

Dear World: Please stop sending me coupons.

Read most of the manga Saturday night; I spent the majority of Sunday watching Coupling, knowing that Series 4 was beginning on BBC America, and found out that Richard Coyle (Jeff) left the cast of the show beginning Series 4. Quite disappointing.

* The title of this post is the catchphrase of dealnews.com, a site which lists all sorts of coupons, rebates, and sales on consumables (mostly consumer electronics and computer equipment).
